Goblins
Sometime after the demise of Source, humanity as a whole was particularly downtrodden. Mortality seemed a curse stronger than even the power of the gods. Indeed it was the power of death that robbed Source of her eternal life. Things looked grim.
When the collective world noticed the loss of Source, a new substance was discovered. Few humans thoroughly investigated the foreign substance, for most of humanity was consumed with the large issue of their inevitable death. Yet the substance sparked the interest of a select few who began to study it in depth. In time it was discovered that the salty substance was a mineral of great power. It permitted the wielder the ability power over a great many things. The substance was a powerful tool. It offered those who trained with it abilities that could only be described as magical.
Over time it was discovered that the substance that mysteriously appeared at the time of Source’s passing was indeed Source herself. So eventually logic taught us that through Source, or in this case her remains, the possessor could wield a portion of the knowledge that the goddess amassed during her lifetime.
Some men were not contented with only a portion of her knowledge: they desired its entirety. These knowledge-hungry humans sought to unwrap the secrets of the universe by consuming the mineral. With Source as part of them it was assumed that her knowledge would instantly be imparted to the consumer, if not her divinity.
After consuming large portions of the mineral, the knowledge-hungry humans discovered that in a way they were right. The knowledge acquired by Source was imparted to them. Unfortunately for them, it was more knowledge than their minds or bodies could handle. The consumption of Source altered the consumers’ physiology. Their skin turned a sickly green as it saturated with knowledge. Their ears peeked so that they may listen to all of the knowledge the world had to share. While they gained the benefit of increased knowledge, their finite minds could not discern the brilliant from the ridiculous. A Source consumer’s mind is like a library books with the bindings ripped out. The knowledge is there but there is a difficulty with the filing system. So from that day on the Source consumers, later named Goblins, have ranged wildly from brilliant and moronic.
While the Goblins gained Source’s knowledge, they did not inherit her divine nature or her eternal life. In fact, the opposite was true. Though it took them some time to discover this, the humans who had consumed Source inherited a portion of the very curse that ended Source’s existence. The endeavor cut their life expectancy in half.
