Sprite

Sprites are one of the oldest races in existence. They are older than humanity and as old as the world itself. In a way, they were there during its creation.

Shortly after Isabella’s conception there was a great display of power in the form of a competition. Rhone and Vellon struggled to influence a monstrous rock. Each competitor struggled to impact the clump of sediment the most. Rhone smashed the soil with his legendary hammer, while Vellon opened the heavens and loosed his storm clouds. Debris and water rained from the skies, and the two deities displayed their might. During the upheaval Isabella saw an opportunity. She ran amongst the devastation sowing seeds. Some seeds fell on good earth covered in rich soil; those seeds grew to great trees. Not all of the seeds where so lucky: some seeds fell on rocky ground. Some never took root due to over-hydration, lack of hydration, and some baked in Ayro’s hot sun. It is those seeds that developed into Sprites.

Sprites are the cousins of trees. Though they developed beyond good soil, they are drawn to it. Sprites protect and, in some ways, envy trees. They see them as the lucky few. Trees are the strong stable brothers of free-spirited fun-loving Sprites. Indeed it is this close connection to nature that instills Sprites with the ability to commune with their stationary brothers.

Over time Sprites have learned a great deal from communing with nature. Sprites were the first shape shifters and forest guardians. As time progressed, others expressed interest in the forest and her secrets. While apprehensive, Sprites have on countless occasions shared their knowledge of the natural world with other races.

Most sprites live in or near the forest. Though there are few occasions where sprites have made their home elsewhere. Sprites always respect and defend nature. After all, the trees are their distant relatives.

A Sprite’s life expectancy is a mirror of the tree they would have been. Sprites do not reproduce the same way that humanity and many of the other races do. Every spring each Sprite grows a small patch of seeds at the base of their head, beneath their hair where the head meets the neck. Throughout the summer these seeds develop, and by autumn they are ready to fall. If the seeds take root they grow into trees, but if they fall by the wayside and are not eaten or otherwise destroyed, they grow and mature into Sprite children.

Fall is a very important time for Sprites, and those that wish to reproduce spent this time beyond the forest canopy in an isolated area. If their seeds fall and develop, the parent then returns to the forest with their child. Due to this form of reproduction, Sprites only ever have one parent. It is just as common to not know your parent, and therefore many Sprite children suffer the unfortunate fate of growing up alone. Most Sprite societies view child rearing as a community task. Schools and large child care “homes” are common place.

Sprites share many qualities with their tree brethren. One such is their long lifespan. They generally live to 300 years and beyond.
